This week, Amazon and Nvidia told a group of oil and gas industry executives that all options for powering artificial intelligence are being considered, including fossil fuels such as natural gas. The tech industry and the energy industry gathered at the Hamm American Energy Institute in Oklahoma City to discuss how the United States can meet the growing energy needs of AI data centers. Most large tech companies invest in renewable energy in an effort to reduce carbon emissions, but they are now operating in a changed political environment. US President Trump has abandoned US commitments to address climate change as he seeks to increase production of fossil fuels, especially natural gas. Today, the tech industry is increasingly openly acknowledging that, at least in the short term, natural gas is needed to power artificial intelligence.
