After an incident involving an emergency descent that injured passengers occurred earlier this month, Air India has implemented mandatory drug tests for its pilots. On August 17 local time, sources in India reported that two more pilots from the airline failed the tests, suspected of "drug driving." According to these sources, Air India initiated drug testing for all of its more than 5,000 pilots as well as those at its subsidiary, IndiGo Air, starting from the 13th of the month. Nearly 400 pilots have completed the tests, with two returning "non-negative" results, which will require further testing. Air India stated that for safety reasons, these two pilots have been grounded. Indias Directorate General of Civil Aviation mandates that if a pilot tests positive on their first drug test, they must undergo detoxification and rehabilitation training, and can return to duty only after their results turn negative. If a second positive result occurs, the pilot's license will be suspended for three years; a third positive test will result in the revocation of their flying license.
