On August 13, Uber announced that Uber Japan has signed an operational cooperation agreement with (Hinomaru Kotsu) to be responsible for the daily fleet operations of Tokyo's autonomous taxi pilot project, which is expected to launch by the end of 2026. will be responsible for vehicle cleaning, maintenance, inspection, charging, and fleet operations, and passengers will be able to use the relevant services through the Uber ride-hailing app. The project will utilize Nissan Leaf electric vehicles, equipped with artificial intelligence driving technology from the UK-based autonomous driving company Wayve. According to relevant Japanese laws, passenger transport services must be operated by authorized taxi companies, so in the initial phase of the pilot project, will act as the authorized operator, with experienced taxi drivers serving as safety monitors on board. In the future, pending regulatory approval, the project will gradually move toward full autonomy.
