Foreign investment in Japan's chip industry has reached 6 trillion yen (approximately 37 billion USD), and this figure continues to grow with Sony Group and TSMC recently announcing the construction of an image sensor factory. TSMC has invested 3 trillion yen in its two fabs in Japan. The first fab has started mass production of logic chips in 2024, while the second is currently under construction. Micron Technology launched an expansion project at its factory in Hiroshima Prefecture last month, planning to invest 1.5 trillion yen to produce advanced memory chips, which are critical for artificial intelligence data centers. Similarly, in July, Israeli chip manufacturer Tower Semiconductor announced an investment of 600 billion yen for the mass production of optical communication equipment chips used in data centers.
