Foreign investment in Japan's chip industry has reached 6 trillion yen, a figure that has further expanded with Sony Group and TSMC recently announcing the construction of image sensor factories. TSMC has invested 3 trillion yen in its two wafer fabs in Japan. Of these, the first wafer fab commenced mass production of logic chips in 2024, while the second is currently under construction. Micron Technology launched an expansion project at its factory in Hiroshima Prefecture last month, planning to invest 1.5 trillion yen to produce advanced memory chips, which are crucial for artificial intelligence data centers. Similarly, in July, Israeli chip manufacturer Tower Semiconductor announced an investment of 600 billion yen to mass-produce optical communication device chips used in data centers.
