On February 10, Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Carrie Lam stated that the Hong Kong SAR government strongly disagrees with the decision of the Panama Supreme Court ruling the renewal of the contract between the Panama government and a Panama port company to operate two ports in Panama as unconstitutional. She urged the Panama government to respect the spirit of the contract and provide a fair and just business environment for enterprises operating legally in the region. Carrie Lam, before attending the executive meeting today, met with the media and expressed that the SAR government's position is clear: they oppose any foreign government using coercion, pressure, or other unreasonable political tactics in international economic and trade relations. The Commerce and Economic Development Bureau met with the Consul General of Panama in Hong Kong last week to express strong dissatisfaction with the ruling. The SAR government believes that Panama has acted in bad faith in legal economic relations, damaging Panama's credibility and causing significant harm to the local business environment and economic development, while also seriously undermining international trade rules. Carrie Lam pointed out that Hong Kong enterprises operating in Panama should receive fair and reasonable treatment and protection. It is believed that this incident has damaged investors' confidence in the business environment in Panama, and they will reconsider their current and future investments in the country. She hopes that the Panamanian authorities will seriously protect the legitimate interests of enterprises.
