Intel Corporation (INTC.US) guidance shocks the market, with Bank of America and JP Morgan both cutting their target prices
JPMorgan and Bank of America downgraded their assessments of Intel on the same day.
Intel Corporation (INTC.US) delivered a third-quarter report that beat expectations, but its fourth-quarter guidance sent the stock tumbling. On October 30, two investment banks downgraded their views on the chip giant on the same day: JP Morgan maintained Neutral and cut its target price from US$85 to US$80; BofA Securities downgraded directly from Buy to Neutral and slashed its target price from US$145 to US$100.
Q3: DCAI delivers its strongest quarter-on-quarter growth in 15 years
September-quarter revenue was US$16.513 billion, up 20.9% year on year, 0.7% above JP Morgan's own forecast and broadly in line with Wall Street expectations. What really stood out was the mix and margins: Data Center and AI (DCAI) revenue was US$7.318 billion, up 16.9% quarter on quarter and about 78% year on year, the segment's strongest quarter-on-quarter growth in 15 years, driven by broad-based strength from hyperscalers, enterprises and emerging cloud customers; JP Morgan estimates its ASIC business grew more than 50% quarter on quarter and more than doubled year on year, with an annualized scale of about US$2.8 billion.
The profit mix also shifted: according to JP Morgan's segment table, DCAI operating profit was US$3.039 billion, an operating margin of 41.5%; CCG was US$2.285 billion, 28.2%; and the foundry segment posted a loss of US$1.853 billion, a margin of -27.7%.
BofA, however, attached caveats to this strength: data center CPUs are indeed benefiting from the demand wave driven by agentic AI, but are constrained by supply tightness in substrates and other links, and the products have not yet caught up technologically with AMD and ARM-architecture rivals that are growing 2 to 4 times faster.
Intel Corporation's foundry revenue was US$6.697 billion, up 58% year on year; external foundry revenue was about US$410 million (JP Morgan: US$411 million; BofA: US$406 million), with the quarter-on-quarter increase mainly from a non-recurring customer project. The foundry segment's operating loss narrowed to US$1.9 billion (US$2.3 billion a year earlier). Gross margin was 44.1%, about 200 basis points above the market's 42.1% expectation, thanks to lower costs and improved product mix for Intel 3 and 18A; adjusted earnings per share were US$0.52, significantly above the US$0.40 to US$0.41 consensus.
The only weak spot was client: CCPG revenue was US$8.097 billion, down 8.8% quarter on quarter, with JP Morgan saying memory shortages suppressed the overall market size. JP Morgan also noted that 18A client CPUs already accounted for about one-third of client revenue (less than 5% in the first quarter).
On cash: third-quarter operating cash flow was US$5.08 billion, capital expenditure about US$4 billion, and cash and equivalents at quarter-end about US$54 billion; there was neither a dividend nor a buyback in the quarter.
The fourth-quarter guidance was what really hit the stock
The problem was the outlook. Intel Corporation guided fourth-quarter revenue to US$15 billion to US$16 billion (midpoint US$15.5 billion), about 9% below the roughly US$17.05 billion market consensus; adjusted earnings per share guidance was US$0.25, far below the US$0.43 to US$0.44 consensus.
The drag came mainly from client: JP Morgan said CCPG fell more than 20% quarter on quarter, while BofA estimated more specifically that PC shipments fell 25% to 30% quarter on quarter. Management cut its forecast for the total PC market size to a 12% decline in 2026 and a further 10% decline in 2027, and expects OEM inventory correction to continue until at least the first quarter of 2027. DCAI is expected to grow by a low-teens percentage quarter on quarter, only partially offsetting the decline.
Gross margin guidance was 38.0%, also far below the 42.8% market threshold, down about 600 basis points quarter on quarter; JP Morgan said the decline is roughly split evenly among lower production volumes diluting fixed costs, a worse product mix and the Israel impact.
Two additional variables: Israel Fab 28 and the inventory cycle
The temporary shutdown of the Israel Fab 28 plant was included in guidance, bringing about US$300 million of fourth-quarter revenue impact and about 200 basis points of gross margin impact (concentrated in 10nm server products); JP Morgan expects a similar US$300 million impact in the first quarter, but most of the scrap losses will roll off, and first-quarter gross margin could return to around 40%.
Both banks were consistently cautious on inventory: JP Morgan said customers are aggressively cutting weeks of inventory, with the correction continuing into the first quarter of 2027; BofA extended its correction expectation into the first half of 2027.
A year of spending: capex steps up, free cash flow turns negative
The forward investment cycle is clearly accelerating. Management said 2027 capital expenditure will grow "strongly" from the 2026 baseline of US$20 billion, with JP Morgan considering above US$26 billion a reasonable assumption (BofA's model is also US$26 billion, and US$30.4 billion in 2028); equipment orders rose 40% quarter on quarter, Arizona Fab 62 is accelerating, and Ohio is also discussing further acceleration.
As a result, 2027 free cash flow was confirmed to be negativebut the two banks differ on the size of the gap: JP Morgan's model shows about negative US$6.6 billion, while BofA's model shows about negative US$2.6 billion. JP Morgan also noted that the US$23 billion equity financing in August was explicitly positioned to support this round of investment.
Foundry: costs and yields are improving, but external customers have yet to land
The two banks agree on execution progress: Intel 18A costs have fallen about 40% since the first quarter, yields are better than planned, and Intel 3 costs are down about 15%; the 0.9 version PDK for 14A was released on schedule in October; 18A-P is on track for launch by year-end, with "several highly strategic customers" in talks; and more than 10 long-term CPU agreements have been signed, including the already-disclosed Oracle Corporation (ORCL.US).
The disagreement is whether this is enough. The direct reason for BofA's downgrade was that the share price "has yet to reflect sufficient progress in external foundry customers." Its foundry valuation remains scenario-basedassuming Apple Inc. M-series wafers, MediaTek TPU packaging, Terafab IP and packaging, and potential ARM-architecture server CPUs gradually materialize, external wafer revenue would reach US$40 billion and advanced packaging US$6 billion by 2030, for total foundry revenue of US$46 billion, corresponding to an 8% to 10% share of the roughly US$380 billion wafer foundry market. BofA stressed that it will not adjust its foundry base model until the details of 18A-P/14A deals become clear.
Target prices: JP Morgan and BofA differ in both method and time horizon
JP Morgan's US$80 target price (horizon December 2027) is based on about 25 times price-to-earnings, multiplied by annualized earnings per share exiting 2028: 4 times its fourth-quarter 2028 forecast of US$0.79 per share, or US$3.16. Its earnings forecasts were cut accordingly2026 revenue/EPS from US$63.3 billion/US$1.58 to US$61.9 billion/US$1.48, and 2027 from US$77.7 billion/US$2.44 to US$67.2 billion/US$1.68, a 31% cut to 2027 adjusted EPS.
BofA's US$100 target price uses a different method: based on 2030 EPS potential of US$5.89 (previously US$6.14), applying a 20 times P/E, then discounting back two years at a 9% discount rate. BofA breaks this target price into a market value of about US$550 billionabout US$450 billion for the product business (roughly equivalent to half of AMD's market value; the two overlap in server CPUs but the latter has an additional GPU business), plus about US$100 billion for the foundry business; referencing Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd. Sponsored ADR's roughly 11 times price-to-sales ratio, US$100 billion implies US$8 billion to US$10 billion of external business. The two target prices have different horizons and valuation anchors, so they do not constitute a like-for-like high-versus-low comparison.
It is worth noting that the two banks' downgraded 2027 EPS forecasts (US$1.68 and US$1.69) are very close and both below market consensusJP Morgan cited a consensus of US$2.12, while BofA listed both Bloomberg's US$2.12 and Visible Alpha's US$2.09; for 2028 the two are US$2.82 and US$2.79, also below the US$3.19 to US$3.20 consensus. JP Morgan explained its Neutral rating as a relatively balanced risk-reward: team execution has indeed improved since Lip-Bu Tan became CEO, and investors should track the data center CPU roadmap, AI compute strategy, external foundry customer discussions and ASIC design order backlog.
BofA listed upside risks as major external foundry packaging/wafer orders, better-than-expected 18A and 14A yield ramp, stronger-than-expected PCs, and GEO Group Inc political momentum boosting domestic manufacturing sentiment; downside risks are yields missing expectations, a lack of substantive external wafer customers, further PC weakness and accelerated share loss.
Spillover: AMD under pressure, equipment stocks benefit
BofA gave a clear cross-sector read-through: PC weakness will weigh on AMD (AMD.US), which reports next week, with a PC drag of up to US$750 million, partly offset by more than US$500 million of strong server CPU revenueconsensus expects AMD's fourth-quarter client PC to be flat, while Intel Corporation is down 25% to 30%; however, the ramp of AMD's Helios/MI series could provide a strong hedge. Intel Corporation's data center strength is a positive signal for NVIDIA Corporation (NVDA.US), Broadcom Inc. (AVGO.US) and Marvell Technology, Inc. (MRVL.US); capex intentions (growth in 2027, with a rising equipment share) are positive for semiconductor equipment, especially KLA Corporation (KLAC.US), Applied Materials (AMAT.US) and Lam Research Corporation (LRCX.US).
