As of August 30, 2026, the total assets of the Exchange Fund stood at HK$4,335.4 billion, a decrease of HK$68.3 billion from the end of July 2026.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority announced today (September 30) that as of August 30, 2026, the total assets of the Exchange Fund stood at HK$4,335.4 billion, a decrease of HK$68.3 billion from the end of July 2026. Foreign currency assets decreased by HK$68.0 billion, while Hong Kong dollar assets decreased by HK$0.3 billion. The decrease in foreign currency assets was mainly due to the withdrawal of fiscal reserve deposits. The decrease in Hong Kong dollar assets was mainly due to the mark-to-market revaluation of Hong Kong equities.
The Hong Kong Monetary Authority's Monetary Authority Account shows that the monetary base at the end of August 2026 was HK$2,080.2 billion, an increase of HK$0.1 billion, or 0.01%, from the end of July 2026. The increase in the monetary base was mainly due to the discount amortization of issued Exchange Fund bills and bonds, but the increase was partially offset by a decrease in the total amount of Certificates of Indebtedness.
The total amount of backing assets increased by HK$3.2 billion to HK$2,329.9 billion at the end of August 2026, an increase of 0.14%. The increase in backing assets was mainly due to interest income from investments, but the increase was partially offset by the redemption of Certificates of Indebtedness and the mark-to-market revaluation of investments. The backing ratio rose from 111.86% at the end of July 2026 to 112.00% at the end of August 2026.
