Total deposits with Hong Kong authorized institutions rose 1.4% in August 2026, with Hong Kong dollar and foreign currency deposits increasing by 2.2% and 0.8% respectively.
On 30 September, statistics published by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority showed that total deposits with Hong Kong authorized institutions rose by 1.4% in August 2026, with Hong Kong dollar deposits and foreign currency deposits increasing by 2.2% and 0.8% respectively. From the beginning of the year to the end of August, total deposits and Hong Kong dollar deposits rose by 7.3% and 8.6% respectively. Renminbi deposits in Hong Kong fell by 2.1% in August to RMB1,101.5 billion at the end of August. The total remittance of renminbi for cross-border trade settlement amounted to RMB1,537.6 billion in August, compared with RMB1,383.7 billion in July. Total loans and advances rose by 0.3% in August, and by 7.0% from the beginning of the year to the end of August. Among these, loans for use in Hong Kong (including trade finance) rose by 0.4% in August, while loans for use outside Hong Kong remained broadly unchanged. As Hong Kong dollar deposits increased by more than Hong Kong dollar loans, the Hong Kong dollar loan-to-deposit ratio fell to 69.3% at the end of August from 70.7% at the end of July. Hong Kong dollar M2 and M3 both rose by 2.1% in August, and both rose by 9.9% compared with the same period a year earlier. The seasonally adjusted Hong Kong dollar M1 rose by 3.5% in August, and by 4.7% compared with the same period a year earlier, partly reflecting investment-related activities. Total M2 and M3 both rose by 1.4% in August, and both rose by 11.0% compared with the same period a year earlier.
