Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI.US) surged over 15% as its revenue guidance for fiscal year 2027 significantly exceeded expectations. Wall Street still has divergent views on the growth prospects and profit margins.
Supermicro's stock price surged over 15%. Although the company's latest fourth-quarter performance for fiscal year 2026 did not meet market expectations for revenue, profit performance was better than expected due to improvements in gross margin. At the same time, it provided a strong revenue and earnings per share guidance for fiscal year 2027.
On Wednesday, Super Micro Computer, Inc. (SMCI.US) saw its stock price surge over 15%. While the company's latest fourth quarter performance for fiscal year 2026 reported revenues below market expectations, its earnings performance exceeded expectations due to an improvement in gross margins. The company also provided a strong revenue and earnings per share guidance for fiscal year 2027. Analysts responded differently; some institutions are optimistic about the growth potential driven by demand for AI infrastructure, while others warned that the high proportion of GPU server business may continue to suppress profit margins and free cash flow.
Revenue guidance for fiscal year 2027 far exceeds market expectations
Needham maintained a Buy rating on Super Micro Computer, Inc. with a target price of $46. The firm pointed out that while the fourth quarter revenues were below the consensus market expectation, the earnings performance exceeded expectations, mainly benefiting from stronger-than-expected gross margins.
What garnered more market attention was the companys outlook for fiscal year 2027. Super Micro Computer, Inc. expects the midpoint of its revenue guidance for fiscal year 2027 to reach $68.5 billion, significantly higher than the approximately $54.4 billion expectation on Wall Street before the financial report was released. Management also reiterated the backlog of $60 billion mentioned previously, providing strong visibility for future revenue growth.
Needham indicated that the lower-than-expected revenue in the fourth quarter was primarily due to short-term delays from clients regarding power, cooling, and networking infrastructure, rather than a significant deterioration in demand for AI server terminals.
From a business structure perspective, enterprise customer channels contributed approximately 50% of the companys sales in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, a marked increase from 28% in the previous quarter, while AI solutions accounted for about 60% of revenues. However, given the current backlog order structure, the company expects the proportion of revenue from AI solutions to rise back to about 80% in the future.
Needham also anticipates a gradual improvement in the companys gross margin from a level of approximately 10.6% in the first quarter of fiscal year 2027.
Gross margin unexpectedly reached 17.6%, Wedbush raises target price
Wedbush raised its target price for Super Micro Computer, Inc. from $34 to $40, while maintaining a Neutral rating.
Analyst Matt Bryson noted that the companys overall performance for the fourth quarter was generally in line with previous forecasts, but the gross margin performance far exceeded expectations, reaching 17.6%, more than double the previous guidance range of 8.2% to 8.4%.
Wedbush believes that the future growth expectations for Super Micro Computer, Inc. currently appear reasonable, and management expects the gross margin to fall back to around 10%, a target that is relatively easy to achieve. In addition, following the adjustment in stock price, the companys valuation has returned to, or even fallen below, historically common levels for server manufacturers, creating conditions for a more positive future outlook.
However, Wedbush remains cautious. Bryson stated that the firm wants to see Super Micro Computer, Inc. complete its investigation into issues related to shipping GPU servers to China and establish new internal controls to reduce the probability of similar violations occurring in the future.
Wedbush also believes that the strong backlog of orders and fiscal year 2027 performance outlook for Super Micro Computer, Inc. serves as a positive signal for Dell Technologies, Inc. Class C (DELL.US) and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co. (HPE.US), as it indicates that demand for AI servers and related infrastructure remains strong, likely benefiting Super Micro Computer, Inc.s main OEM competitors.
Susquehanna maintains a Negative rating, warning that GPU business continues to suppress profit margins
In contrast to Needham, Susquehannas stance is significantly more cautious, maintaining a Negative rating on Super Micro Computer, Inc. with a target price of $15.
The firm believes that the increase in income contribution from CPU servers and traditional enterprise systems is somewhat beneficial for improving profitability, as these products typically have higher gross margins than GPU servers. However, to maintain the current high growth rate, Super Micro Computer, Inc. still needs to keep a significant exposure to GPU-driven AI infrastructure deployments, which will continue to compress the companys overall gross margin and may lead to continued outflows of free cash flow.
Susquehanna also noted that the companys recent financing has alleviated short-term liquidity pressure, but there are currently almost no signs that management is making significant changes to its growth-first operational strategy.
The firm believes that the cumulative free cash flow consumption by Super Micro Computer, Inc. over the past three to five years has significantly exceeded cumulative operating profits, reflecting that the company's business model still prioritizes revenue growth over enhancing shareholder value creation capabilities.
Strong demand for AI servers, but profit quality remains a focal point of market debate
Overall, this financial report reinforced the market's expectations for future revenue growth of Super Micro Computer, Inc. The backlog of up to $60 billion and the $68.5 billion revenue guidance for fiscal year 2027 demonstrate that investments in AI infrastructure are still generating substantial demand for the company.
However, the main divide on Wall Street has shifted from Is there demand for AI servers? to Can high growth be translated into sustainable profits and cash flow? On one hand, the increased share of enterprise and CPU systems helps improve the product mix; on the other hand, the expectation that the AI business will reclaim about 80% of revenue implies that GPU servers will continue to be the core of growth, which, along with their lower profit margins and higher capital requirements, may continue to limit the companys profit quality.
Therefore, despite the strong outlook for fiscal year 2027 driving up Super Micro Computer, Inc.'s stock price, analysts still have significant differences in opinion regarding the company's ability to maintain high expansion in AI business while improving gross margin and free cash flow.
