National Energy Administration Reports New-Type Energy Storage Capacity Exceeds 100 Million Kilowatts by End‑September

China’s new-type energy storage capacity exceeded 100 million kilowatts as of the time of publication, up more than 30-fold from the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan, accounting for over 40% of global installations.

Shanghai, November 5 (Xinhua) — At the “High‑Quality Development of New‑Type Energy Storage to Promote Global Energy Transition” sub‑forum of the 8th Hongqiao International Economic Forum, Bian Guangqi, Deputy Director of the Department of Energy Conservation and Science & Technology Equipment at the National Energy Administration, reported that China’s new‑type energy storage sector has maintained steady, rapid growth. By the end of September 2025, installed capacity of new‑type energy storage in China surpassed 100 million kilowatts.

Bian noted this represents an increase of more than 30 times compared with the end of the 13th Five‑Year Plan period, and that China’s installed capacity accounts for over 40% of the global total, ranking first worldwide. Recent years have seen rapid expansion in deployment, ongoing breakthroughs in technology and industry development, gradual maturation of commercial models, and widening application scenarios, signaling a transition from early commercialization to large‑scale development.

Regarding single‑station scale, the majority of new‑type storage facilities now exceed 100,000 kilowatts in capacity and provide storage durations of two to four hours. Stations with capacities of 100,000 kilowatts or more constitute over two‑thirds of total installations, evidencing a pronounced trend toward larger projects. Two‑hour and four‑hour configurations represent 76.4% and 16.7% of installed capacity respectively, yielding an average storage duration of 2.34 hours.

As deployment expands, new‑type energy storage is increasingly supporting renewable energy integration, enhancing the security and stability of the power system, and strengthening electricity supply assurance. In the first three quarters of 2025, the nationwide equivalent utilization hours for new‑type energy storage were approximately 770 hours, up about 120 hours year‑on‑year. Provinces and regions including Yunnan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Xinjiang, Sichuan, Qinghai and Hubei reported robust utilization, reflecting the growing regulatory role of storage.

Innovation in storage equipment continues to advance and technological pathways are diversifying. Bian emphasized that disruptive frontier technologies, such as solid‑state batteries and hydrogen‑based storage, are accelerating, providing solid support to meet future power‑system demands for multi‑time‑scale, high‑safety energy storage.
