Cui Dongshu: Retail sales of passenger vehicles in August increased by 5%, with lower retail sales for both sedans and SUVs.
In August 2025, retail sales of passenger vehicles increased by 5%, significantly lower than the 15% growth in wholesale.
On September 14, Cui Dongshu, Secretary General of the China Passenger Car Association, stated that in August 2025, the retail sales of passenger cars increased by 5%, significantly lower than the 15% growth in wholesale. Due to restrictions on high interest rates and high returns, as well as the suspension of subsidies, retail sales fell in August, with both sedan and SUV retail sales lower. C-class SUVs became the main force in August retail sales, with strong performance in the high-end SUV segment. Sales of A0-level sedans rebounded, and sales of A00-level sedans performed well.
In August, the overall wholesale pattern of major passenger car manufacturers continued to change, with some mid-level companies showing signs of gradual growth, such as GEELY AUTO, Dongfeng Nissan, Xiaopeng Motors, Xiaomi Motors, and LEAPMOTOR.
Due to high export growth, CKH Holdings' domestic retail sales remained strong in the first half of the year. The growth rate of passenger car retail sales in August 2025 was slower than wholesale. The policy-driven nature of the 2025 vehicle market is evident, with demand for sedans increasing due to the scrappage and renewal policy in 2025, and the policy of trading in old cars for new ones driving demand for SUVs.
