National Bureau of Statistics: CPI in February decreased by 0.7% year-on-year.

On March 9th, according to the National Bureau of Statistics, in February 2025, the national consumer price index (CPI) decreased by 0.7% compared to the same period last year. In urban areas, the CPI decreased by 0.7%, and in rural areas, it also decreased by 0.7%. Food prices dropped by 3.3%, while non-food prices dropped by 0.1%. Consumer goods prices decreased by 0.9%, and service prices decreased by 0.4%. From January to February, the national consumer price index decreased by 0.1% compared to the same period last year. In February, the national consumer price index decreased by 0.2% month-on-month, with urban areas seeing a 0.2% decrease and rural areas seeing a 0.1% decrease. Food prices dropped by 0.5%, non-food prices dropped by 0.1%, consumer goods prices remained stable, and service prices decreased by 0.5%. I. Changes in various commodity and service prices year-on-year In February, the prices of food, tobacco, and alcohol decreased by 1.9% compared to the same period last year, impacting the CPI with around a 0.54 percentage point decrease. Within food prices, vegetable prices dropped by 12.6%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.31 percentage point decrease; seafood prices decreased by 3.6%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.07 percentage point decrease; egg prices decreased by 2.7%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.02 percentage point decrease; meat prices decreased by 1.8%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.05 percentage point decrease, with pork prices rising by 4.1%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.05 percentage point increase; fruit prices decreased by 1.8%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.04 percentage point decrease; and grain prices decreased by 1.3%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.02 percentage point decrease. The prices of the other seven categories either rose or fell. Prices in other goods and services and clothing rose by 6.5% and 1.2% respectively, while prices in health care and housing rose by 0.2% and 0.1% respectively; prices in transportation and communication, household goods and services, and education, culture, and entertainment fell by 2.5%, 0.7%, and 0.5% respectively. II. Changes in various commodity and service prices month-on-month In February, the prices of food, tobacco, and alcohol decreased by 0.2% compared to the previous month, impacting the CPI with around a 0.07 percentage point decrease. Within food prices, egg prices dropped by 5.5%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.04 percentage point decrease; vegetable prices dropped by 3.8%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.08 percentage point decrease; meat prices dropped by 0.9%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.03 percentage point decrease, with pork prices dropping by 1.9%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.03 percentage point decrease; fruit prices rose by 1.8%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.04 percentage point increase; and seafood prices rose by 1.2%, impacting the CPI with around a 0.02 percentage point increase. Prices in the other seven categories either rose or fell. Prices in other goods and services rose by 0.7%; housing and health care prices remained stable; education, culture, and entertainment, and transportation and communication prices fell by 0.5% and 0.4% respectively, while clothing and household goods and services prices both fell by 0.1%.
