Research firm Rho Motion said on Wednesday that global sales of pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in January increased by 18% year-on-year to 1.3 million units, marking the third consecutive month of slowing growth.
In China, electric vehicle sales grew by 11.8% year-on-year to 700,000 units in the same month.
Sales in Europe reached 250,000 units, a 21% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
Charles Lester, data manager at Rho Motion, stated that the European car market had a strong start this year due to the implementation of the EU's carbon dioxide emissions regulations.
In January, Europe engaged in new negotiations with executives, unions, and interest groups in the automotive industry regarding carbon dioxide emission targets.
Rho Motion noted that in major markets on the European continent, sales in France decreased by 52% due to heavy taxes on plug-in hybrid vehicles, while Germany's sales increased by over 40%, partly due to the sudden termination of electric vehicle subsidies in January 2024.
In the United States and Canada, electric vehicle sales in January increased by 22.1% to 130,000 units.
Sales in other regions of the world grew by 50% in January.
On a monthly basis, global sales decreased by 35% due to the impact of the Chinese New Year holiday.
