Hong Kong has set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
The Director of the Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department, Che Zhanhuan, attended the 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and delivered a speech at the China Corner event.
Hong Kong Secretary for the Environment and Ecology, Wong Kam-sing, attended the 29th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) and delivered a speech at the side event hosted by China. Wong Kam-sing stated, "Hong Kong reached carbon peak in 2014 and has set a goal to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. By 2023, Hong Kong's per capita greenhouse gas emissions will be around 4.4 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, a reduction of nearly 30% compared to 2014."
Wong Kam-sing continued to mention that the "Hong Kong Climate Action Blue Print 2050" consists of four major strategies: achieving zero carbon emissions from electricity generation, promoting energy-efficient green buildings, implementing green transportation, and promoting waste reduction among the populace. Under these strategies, there are three important goals: first, to phase out coal-fired power generation by 2035. Coal currently accounts for less than 20% of Hong Kong's electricity generation mix. Second, to promote green transportation. The Hong Kong government plans to stop registering new petrol and hybrid private cars by 2035. In the first half of this year, six to seven out of every ten newly registered private cars in Hong Kong were electric vehicles. Third, to address methane emissions from landfills. The Hong Kong government aims to stop using landfills by 2035, with the first waste-to-energy facility set to be operational next year. A second facility, capable of processing 6,000 tons of waste per day, will be tendered for construction in December.
Wong Kam-sing also noted that Hong Kong serves as a regional hub and a gateway for the country to connect with the world. The country has many innovative products and technologies that can help create a green future, reduce carbon emissions, and support the construction of infrastructure and cities in a green, low-carbon, and safe manner. Hong Kong can serve as a gateway to promote these green technologies and products globally, contributing to the fight against climate change.
