Canadian e-commerce giant Shopify (SHOP.US) and the founder of Slack Technologies Inc. are jointly following the investment pace of Peter Thiel, a famous investor in Silicon Valley and the next Vice President of the United States, JD Vance. They jointly invested in a Canadian financial technology company, Neo Financial Technologies Inc., which provides Canadians with credit cards, mortgage loans, and savings accounts.
Neo Financial is currently in the process of raising funds in a Series D round, with an expected total of approximately 360 million Canadian dollars (about 259 million US dollars). Shopify CEO Tobi Lutke, Slack founder Stewart Butterfield, the Thomson family from Canada, and Valar Ventures supported by Silicon Valley investment mogul Peter Thiel are all participating in the investment.
The company stated in a recent statement that the latest round of financing includes up to 110 million Canadian dollars in equity financing and 250 million Canadian dollars in debt, but did not provide a specific valuation.
Media reports indicate that Neo Financial, headquartered in Calgary, Canada, generated total revenues in the range of 75-100 million Canadian dollars last year. "We need a culture of striving for excellence in Canada, and this is exactly what the Neo Financial team possesses," said Shopify CEO Lutke in a statement.
Peter Thiel, a Silicon Valley investment mogul, is not just a simple venture capitalist. He is firmly aligned with the Trump camp and is a close friend of the next Vice President of the United States, JD Vance. Therefore, some media speculate that Thiel may become a bridge between Silicon Valley and Washington.
After Trump takes office in January next year, based on the policy framework revealed in his presidential election speech, the US government under his leadership will likely focus on accelerating the development of cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, quantum computing, nuclear fusion, and aerospace. Trump himself has stated that he will delegate most of the policymaking plans supporting frontier technology development to Vice President JD Vance.
Analysts believe that given Thiel's future important position in the Trump administration, his cooperation with the technology industry may influence policies and regulations. Collaborating with Thiel and his venture capital company may provide support and assistance to the Canadian e-commerce giant Shopify in international policy communication with the United States in the future.
Collaboration with Peter Thiel may also make it easier for Neo Financial and Shopify to expand into the US market, especially considering the direction of US policy and Thiel's personal network. With Shopify's global e-commerce platform and the financial technology services provided by Neo Financial, this innovation can be expanded to a larger market, potentially impacting American and global customer bases. This collaboration, especially given Shopify's large customer base, may form a cross-border financial service ecosystem in the future, leveraging Thiel's influence in both politics and business sectors to penetrate larger markets.
