Larry Ellison, Chairman and Co-founder of Oracle Corporation (ORCL.US), announced a statement this week. Ellison told investors on Monday during the company's earnings call that the power demand for artificial intelligence has become so "crazy" that Oracle Corporation is seeking to obtain power from next-generation nuclear technology. The Chairman of Oracle Corporation said that the company is designing a data center that will require over 1 gigawatt of power. He added that the data center will be powered by three small nuclear reactors. Ellison said, "We have identified the site and power location, they have been licensed to build three nuclear reactors. These are small modular nuclear reactors to power the data center. Things are getting crazy. This is the situation now." Ellison did not disclose the location of the data center and the future reactors. With the increasing power demands of data centers, manufacturing, and broader electrification of the economy, small modular nuclear reactors are a new design that is expected to accelerate the deployment of reliable, carbon-free energy. Generally, these reactors have a power output of 300 megawatts or less, roughly one-third of existing typical reactors in the United States. They will be prefabricated into several pieces and then assembled on-site, reducing the high capital costs that hinder large-scale factory construction. Currently, small modular reactors are a technology of the future, with nuclear industry executives generally believing that small modular reactors will not be commercialized in the United States until the 2030s. According to nuclear agencies, there are currently three operating small modular reactors in the world, running in China, Russia, and Japan.
