The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) in the United States has started a long-awaited trial against Amazon this week, focusing on the e-commerce giant's membership cancellation mechanism. The lawsuit, filed by the Biden administration in 2023, accuses Amazon of using deceptive user interface design to induce millions of consumers to sign up for its Prime membership service and making it difficult to cancel memberships. A spokesperson for Amazon said, "Ultimately, Amazon and the individual defendants have done nothing wrong. We still believe that the facts will prove that the actions of these executives were appropriate, and we always put customers first." The trial is expected to last about a month, with jury selection beginning on Monday and opening arguments scheduled for Tuesday. If the jury finds Amazon guilty, a judge will decide the amount of damages Amazon must pay.
