Academician Zhang Jie: Three-step plan to build Shanghai's first commercial fusion power plant by 2045.
On September 21, Zhang Jie, director of the Li Zhengdao Research Institute and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, stated at the main forum of the Pujiang Innovation Forum that the institute is currently taking a three-step approach, hoping to build the first commercial fusion power plant in Shanghai by 2045. Zhang Jie revealed that the research base for laser fusion has already started construction at the end of 2024. From 2026 to 2030, efforts will be made to further improve the gain of laser fusion and to break through the key research and development of 50 hertz fusion energy technology. By around 2030, all the technologies of laser fusion reactor will be verified. From 2031 to 2035, engineering demonstrations for laser fusion will be conducted, with the ultimate goal of achieving commercial operation by 2045.
