According to sources, after a phone call between von der Leyen and Trump, the EU plans to submit a proposal for the latest round of sanctions against Russia to member states as early as Friday. Following the call on Tuesday, the President of the European Commission stated that the sanctions would be the 19th round and would target cryptocurrency, banking, and energy sectors. The United States has been pressuring its G7 allies to impose tariffs of up to 100% on India for purchasing Russian oil, in order to force Putin and the Ukrainian side back to the negotiating table. However, this demand may face resistance in the capitals of EU member states. Sources also indicate that Trump reiterated in the call that he prefers pressure through tariffs over sanctions. Currently, G7 officials are working to advance a series of proposals, with the goal of finalizing the relevant plans within the next two weeks.
