The Pentagon lawyers express concern about Trump's crackdown on suspected drug-trafficking ships.
According to reports, sources familiar with the matter have revealed that some military lawyers and other officials at the Department of Defense are expressing concerns about the legal implications of President Trump's escalating military actions against Latin American drug trafficking groups. The sources say that these concerns involve the legitimacy of the military operations themselves, as well as the potential legal consequences for U.S. military personnel involved in the operations. According to one source, some Department of Defense officials and military lawyers have provided written and oral legal advice to decision-makers within the Pentagon, but feel that their advice has been ignored or intentionally disregarded. Reports of internal dissent may intensify scrutiny of the operation by the public, with members of Congress and external experts condemning the operation as a series of extrajudicial killings. However, so far these concerns have not deterred the Trump administration from expanding the operation: the Pentagon attacked a second vessel on international waters on Monday, claiming the ship was transporting illegal drugs to the U.S., resulting in three deaths.
