The Kenya Mombasa Commuter Metre Gauge Railway, built by a Chinese enterprise, officially opened for operation.
On September 17th, local time, the Mombasa Commuter Light Rail built by Chinese companies officially began operating in Kenya. This commuter rail connects the city center of Mombasa with the Mombasa Terminus of the Mombasa-Nairobi railway, greatly alleviating the commuting pressure on the local people. The Mombasa Light Rail was built in 1896, and some sections were long neglected. To restore the commuter function of the line, the Kenyan local government carried out comprehensive repairs and upgrades. The project is 16.8 kilometers long, including repaired sections and new sections such as a sea-crossing railway bridge. In the past, it took about an hour to take a taxi from the Mombasa Terminus of the Mombasa-Nairobi railway to the city center of Mombasa, costing approximately 60 yuan. Now, by taking the commuter light rail, it only takes 30 minutes to reach the destination, and the fare is only about 3 yuan, truly connecting the "last mile" of commuting for the local people. Kenyan President Kenyatta attended the opening ceremony and stated that this commuter rail is an important part of Kenya's overall road network, strengthening Mombasa's role as a regional economic, trade, and tourism hub, and enhancing Kenya's role as the gateway to East Africa.
