On September 16th, JD and Guizhou Maotai held a "JD wine tasting event". JD founder Liu Qiangdong mentioned at the event that he is particularly fond of cooking, so he has always been very interested in the catering industry. He pointed out that he had inadvertently discovered that the commission charged by food delivery platforms in the market can be as high as 25%. "Because my first venture was a restaurant, I am very clear that most people in the catering industry are couples who have saved up money for more than 20 years, collected 500,000 yuan, rented a storefront, renovated it, and started a catering business. In fact, there are hardly any catering businesses nationwide that can achieve a net profit margin of 25%," Liu Qiangdong said. He stated that the profit margin of catering business cannot reach 25%, but the platform wants to take 25%, which results in food safety not being guaranteed, leading to the emergence of ghost restaurants and catering practitioners having to lower the quality of food in order to bear the cost of the commission and still make a profit.
