During an interview, US Energy Secretary Chris Wright stated that the United States is taking steps to gradually phase out the use of Russian enriched uranium. However, due to the high dependence on Russian supply, the US is not yet ready to completely eliminate it. According to data from the US Department of Energy, the US currently has 94 nuclear reactors (which generate about one-fifth of the total electricity in the US), and Russia currently supplies approximately one-fourth of the total enriched uranium needed for these reactors. If there were a sudden interruption in the supply of Russian enriched uranium, it is estimated that it could affect about 5% of electricity production in the US. Wright pointed out that the US needs to significantly increase domestic uranium mining and enrichment capacity in order to reduce its dependence on Russian supply. He also added that the Trump administration plans to expand strategic uranium reserves, both to address potential supply interruptions and to support the development of the US nuclear energy industry.
