Today is "China Birth Defects Prevention Day". The person in charge of the National Health Commission introduced that in recent years, the National Health Commission has vigorously promoted comprehensive prevention and control of birth defects in collaboration with relevant departments, achieving significant results. China has established a three-level system for the prevention and control of birth defects: primary prevention involves controlling the pre-marital and pre-pregnancy stages, coordinating pre-marital medical examinations, pre-pregnancy examinations, folate supplementation services, and preventing birth defects from occurring; secondary prevention involves providing comprehensive maternal and child health care services, promoting hospital delivery, strengthening prenatal screening, diagnosis, and intervention, and reducing severe and lethal birth defects; tertiary prevention involves controlling the postnatal stage, conducting specialized examinations for congenital and hereditary diseases that pose serious risks to newborn health, striving to detect, intervene, and rehabilitate birth defects early, and reducing the severity of disability in children with birth defects.
