Boeing Defense Company and the Machinists Union held a meeting on Tuesday in an attempt to resume contract negotiations, but the two sides remain at an impasse. The strike by about 3,200 workers in the St. Louis area who assemble military aircraft has entered its sixth week. Negotiations, including a federal mediator, ended hours later with both the company and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) stating that the other side was unwilling to continue negotiations. Officials from IAM in a message to Local 837 members said, "The negotiating committee clearly recognizes that the company is not seriously looking for ways to end the strike." Vice President of Boeing Defense, Dan Gillian, said in a statement, "The union continues to demand more, and we have repeatedly told them that this is not constructive."
