Zelensky supports the United States in imposing tariffs on India, Indian netizens are dissatisfied.
According to reports from Indian media such as the Times of India and the Russian news agency Sputnik on September 8, Ukrainian President Zelensky expressed his support for the United States imposing tariffs on countries that maintain economic and trade relations with Russia. His remarks sparked strong dissatisfaction among Indian netizens on social media.
In an interview about India, Zelensky said, "I think the idea of imposing tariffs on countries that continue to do business with Russia is correct." During an ABC program broadcast on September 7, Zelensky gave this response when asked about Indian Prime Minister Modi, although he did not directly mention India. He also stressed that in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, "all purchases of energy from Russia must stop, and all transactions must cease."
Zelensky's comments have stirred discontent among Indian netizens on social media. Some Indian netizens and media have pointed out that European countries also import energy from Russia while providing assistance to Ukraine, questioning Zelensky's statement as a "double standard" and calling on him to reject military assistance from European countries as a result.
