The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) recently announced that it will launch a Mars environmental simulation mission in October. Four volunteers will conduct a 378-day simulated Mars mission in a 3D-printed simulated habitat at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, USA, to prepare for future manned Mars exploration missions. The four volunteers, Ross Eld, Ellen Ellis, Matthew Montgomery, and James Spencer, are scheduled to enter the 158-square-meter "Mars Dune-1" simulation habitat on October 19 and complete the mission on October 31, 2026. During the simulation mission, the four volunteers will conduct various scientific research and daily operational tasks including simulated surface walks on Mars, vegetable planting, robot operations, and testing new technologies designed for Mars and deep space exploration such as drinking water distribution systems and diagnostic medical equipment.
