International environmental organization Greenpeace, North China Electric Power University, and Shanghai Institute for International Studies jointly released a report today titled "Towards the '14th Five-Year Plan': Research on the Path and Mechanisms of Transformation in Coal and Electricity". The report compares multiple factors such as emissions reduction benefits, economic costs, and deployment of clean energy. With an average annual electricity growth rate of 2.8% during the '14th Five-Year Plan', a new energy installed capacity of 3.1 billion kilowatts by 2030, and a new storage capacity of 270 million kilowatts, coal electricity generation will peak this year, with the peak expected to be controlled within 5.55 trillion kilowatt-hours. This also means that the Chinese electricity sector is expected to reach "peak carbon" in 2025, with a peak of 5.2 billion tons.
