TSMC's Kaohsiung factory discovered an unexploded bomb, marking the third time one has been unearthed.
According to the Global Times quoting Taiwan's United News Network and "EBC News Cloud," on September 7th, an unexploded bomb was found on the outskirts of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company's (TSMC) factory in Nanzih, Kaohsiung. The Taiwan military's unexploded ordnance disposal team was called to the scene and determined it to be a remnant of an early empty bomb. It will be destroyed following the procedures for disposing of waste explosives. The report stated that on September 7th, the Taiwan military received a report that a suspicious unexploded bomb was found at the construction site of the TSMC Nanzih factory, and requested military assistance. The military then sent the unexploded ordnance disposal team to the scene. The Taiwan military stated that the unexploded bomb was determined to be a remnant of an early empty bomb, with severe rust and unidentified lot numbers, posing no safety hazards. It has been safely transported to storage and will be destroyed following the waste ordnance disposal procedures. According to Taiwanese media reports, this is the third time unexploded bombs have been unearthed at the TSMC Kaohsiung factory. On August 27, 2024, during a cleanup operation at the factory, remnants of a "1000-pound empty bomb" were dug up; and on November 11 of the same year, remnants of a "500-pound empty bomb" were also dug up. The bomb bodies unearthed on both occasions were severely rusted. Many believe that these bombs were left behind during the Pacific War 80 years ago when the factory's oil storage facilities were bombed by the US military.
