U.S. Treasury Secretary Mnuchin denied in an interview with NBC News that President Trump's comprehensive trade tariffs are a tax on the American people. He refuted concerns from major U.S. companies such as John Deere, Nike, and Home Depot, all of whom have stated that Trump's tariff policy will cost them billions of dollars annually. Mnuchin said, "People are drawing these conclusions from earnings conference calls. On earnings conference calls, companies have to present a harsh scenario. But no company has come out and said, 'Oh, we did this because of tariffs.'" He then added, "If things are so bad, why is GDP at 3.3%? Why has the stock market reached new highs? Because President Trump cares about both big and small companies."
