Meituan and JD are competing for "offline discount stores", and Liu Qiangdong appeared to cheer them on.
The food delivery war on the internet may soon transform into an offline discount war. On August 30th, JD Discount Supermarket opened four stores in the hometown of the company's founder Liu Qiangdong in Suqian. JD stated that the discount supermarket is supported by the JD supply chain system, with many specialty products sourced directly from the origin to eliminate markups in the middle. On the previous day, August 29th, Liu Qiangdong also appeared in Suqian to hype up the opening of the discount supermarket. In addition to JD, Meituan and Hema have also made moves recently. On August 29th, Meituan's self-operated supermarket Happy Monkey opened its first store in Hangzhou, although it did not directly state that it is a discount store, it also highlighted "good products at affordable prices." On the same day, Hema NB announced a name change to "Super Hema is NB." Since the start of the food delivery war in April, the three internet platforms have now simultaneously updated their actions in the offline discount retail sector.
