Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard said that the political turmoil in France could push the country into recession because it has heightened consumer uncertainty, and consumers have been the main driving force behind growth. "The more uncertainty there is, the greater the risk of an economic impact, and I will decide to postpone consumption," Bompard said. "We are seeing a resurgence of recession risks." Bompard stated that the growth of the French economy relies heavily on consumer spending, which has already shown signs of recovery. However, this growth could be at risk as Prime Minister Beru has called for a government confidence vote on September 8 in an attempt to force all parties to take a stand on its budget plan. Several opposition parties, which together hold a majority in the National Assembly, have said they plan to vote against it, which could lead to the government's resignation.
