Carrefour CEO warns that the political crisis in France could trigger a recession.
Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard said that political turmoil in France could push the country into a recession, as it increases consumer uncertainty, which has been the main engine driving growth. "The more uncertainty there is, the greater the risk of an economic shock, and I will decide to postpone consumption," Bompard said. "We are experiencing a manufacturing of recession risks." Bompard stated that French economic growth relies mainly on consumer spending, which has already seen a slight recovery. However, this growth could be at risk as Prime Minister Beru has called for a government confidence vote on September 8th, attempting to force parties to take a stand on his budget plan. Several opposition parties, which together hold a majority in the National Assembly, have indicated that they plan to vote against, which would force the government to resign.
