On the morning of August 27th, the Taiwan Affairs Office held a routine press conference. Journalist: It is understood that the Straits Exchange Foundation in Taiwan recently sent a letter to the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, hoping to assist in deregistering the household registrations of many mainland residents who have settled in Taiwan and provide relevant proof documents. What is your response to this? Spokesperson Zhu Fenglian of the Taiwan Affairs Office: The dialogue and communication mechanism between the two sides have long been suspended, the reasons for which are well known. Only by returning to the political foundation of the "1992 Consensus", by recognizing the fact that both sides of the Taiwan Strait belong to one country and one nation, can the cross-strait dialogue and communication mechanism be restarted to negotiate and resolve specific matters. The Democratic Progressive Party authorities deliberately target mainland spouses who have settled and registered in Taiwan for many years, even more than 20 years, demanding that they retroactively pay for the so-called "loss of original residency certificate" within a deadline, otherwise their Taiwanese identity will be revoked. This is a typical case of abuse of power, antagonizing the people, with the aim of promoting the idea of "two countries" and serving the cause of Taiwan independence, and has been criticized and opposed by the public opinion and Taiwanese society. Mainland public security agencies always handle household registration matters in accordance with the law and regulations, to solve the people's worries and difficulties, but this does not mean supporting unjust actions. Unless the DPP authorities recognize the One China principle and make a request in the name of the Taiwan province to the relevant authorities of various provinces, regions, and cities, the mainland will not accept such so-called requests made by the DPP authorities.
