Recently, Ms. Xu complained that starting in the second half of 2024, she found that her long-used Xianyu account was restricted from logging in. In July 2025, Ms. Xu contacted Xianyu customer service to inquire about the reason and was told that the account was at risk of being stolen, and she needed to provide her ID and facial information in order to use it normally. During the communication, customer service refused to disclose the criteria for the system's risk assessment of the account and rejected manual verification. She believed that the authenticity and reasonableness of the system monitoring was questionable, and using facial verification as the only way to verify user identity was inappropriate. The Xianyu platform implemented low-level risk detection methods and required "requesting facial information" as a high-level risk mitigation method, which exceeded the scope of collecting facial information. They should publicly apologize for this misconduct. In response, Xianyu platform staff stated that facial recognition could effectively and accurately verify user identity, and the platform would protect user privacy, so there was no need to worry about the risk of privacy leakage; without verifying user identity and removing account restrictions, they were unable to cancel the account or change the phone number to avoid risks of third-party operations.
