The US Department of Labor announced on Thursday that the number of initial claims for unemployment benefits increased by 11,000 people to 235,000 people for the week ending August 16, higher than the market's previous expectation of 225,000 people. The number of continued claims for unemployment benefits for the week ending August 9 rose to 1.97 million people, the highest level since November 2021.
