The New Zealand Earth Science Organization recently published a research report in the international academic journal "Landslides," stating that the"Gabrielle" hurricane that struck New Zealand in 2023 triggered over 800,000 landslides, affecting an area of approximately 100 square kilometers, making it one of the most extreme landslide-triggering events ever recorded worldwide. The research shows that the heavy rainfall brought by the "Gabrielle" hurricane at the time caused the soil to become extremely saturated, leading to many slopes reaching their critical point in soil moisture, resulting in landslides becoming inevitable. In some areas, rainfall reached up to 500 millimeters in 24 hours, more than 50% higher than historical records.
