Spokesperson of the Ministry of Commerce answers questions from reporters on China's lawsuit against Canada's restrictions on imports of steel and other products at the World Trade Organization.
Question: It is reported that China has filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization regarding Canada's import restrictions on steel and other products. Could you please provide specific details?
On August 15th, China filed a lawsuit at the World Trade Organization against Canada's import restrictions on steel and other products.
Canada's imposition of steel tariffs and quotas, as well as the imposition of discriminatory tariffs on products containing so-called "Chinese steel components," disregards WTO rules. These actions are typical of unilateralism and trade protectionism, and they harm China's legitimate rights and interests, disrupting the stability of the global steel and other industries' supply chains. China is strongly dissatisfied with this and firmly opposes it.
We urge Canada to take immediate action to correct its mistakes, uphold a rule-based multilateral trading system, and promote the continued improvement of China-Canada economic and trade relations.
