Trump signs executive order to clean up political discrimination by banks.
President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Thursday aimed at eliminating the practice of banks and their regulatory agencies refusing to provide financial services to customers based on their ideological positions. The White House said in a statement released after the signing that the executive order directs federal banking regulatory agencies to remove reputation risk standards from their guidance and training materials, and to identify financial institutions that have engaged in illegal "de-banking" in the past. If such policies are found in institutions, federal authorities are also instructed to impose fines on the relevant institutions or take other appropriate remedial measures. Regulatory agencies will also be required to review complaint data and refer cases of illegal "de-banking" for religious reasons to the Department of Justice. Financial institutions under the jurisdiction of the Small Business Administration will also be required to make reasonable efforts to restore services to customers who have been illegally denied service. "President Trump believes that no American should be deprived of financial services based on their political or religious beliefs, and bank decisions must be based entirely on individualized, objective, and risk-based analysis," the White House said.
