Mexico and Canada discuss how to respond to U.S. tariff policies.
Mexican President Sinbaum met with Canadian Foreign Minister Anand and Finance Minister Shang Pengfei to discuss jointly addressing US tariff policies and deepening bilateral cooperation. The two sides reached a consensus and will develop a work plan focusing on supply chain resilience, port trade channels, artificial intelligence and the digital economy, energy security, and other areas. The United States has raised tariffs on Canadian goods from 25% to 35%, but products eligible for preferential tariff treatment under the USMCA agreement are exempt. The US and Mexico have agreed to maintain current tariff rates for the next 90 days and negotiate a new trade agreement. Analysts believe that under US tariff pressure, there is huge potential for growth in Mexico-Canada trade, which could eventually lead to the exclusion of the United States from the global economic and trade system.
