Japanese media: The US side says Japan will still face an additional 15% equivalent tariff.
According to a report by Kyodo News on Wednesday, a White House official stated that imported goods from Japan that have already been subject to a 15% or higher tariff will now face an additional 15% "equivalent tariff", in contrast to how the European Union is being treated. The official pointed out that, contrary to Japan's interpretation of recent bilateral trade agreement terms, the United States will not be giving Japan similar special treatment. Under the trade agreement reached by the United States and Japan earlier, Japan's "equivalent tariff" rate is 15%, with a 10% "basic tariff" already being imposed since April, and the rate applicable in Japan will increase from 10% to 15% starting in August. Japanese Minister of Economic Revitalization Ryosuke Katsuzawa stated on the 6th that after confirming with the United States previously, for goods with existing tariff rates lower than 15%, the total tariff rate should be 15% after the August rate increase. However, a recent announcement by the US government shows that Japanese goods subject to tariffs will now have an additional 15% on top of the existing tariff rates, which goes against the agreement and is unfavorable for Japan.
