Analyst: Trump's tariffs have confused India because Biden had urged them to purchase Russian oil.
On Wednesday, US President Trump accused India of "directly or indirectly importing oil from the Russian Federation" and therefore raised the tariff rate on Indian goods by an additional 25%, bringing the total tariff faced by this major US trading partner to 50%. Bob McNally, President of the Rapidan Energy Group and former White House energy advisor under President George W. Bush, told the media, "The New Delhi side is definitely confused now. After the Russia-Ukraine conflict erupted, Biden personally went to India to ask them to buy Russian oil, at that time India hardly imported any Russian oil. The US pleaded, 'please take the Russian oil to maintain low oil prices', and India complied. Now they are turning the tables and asking 'why are you buying so much Russian oil?'"
