The Thai Cabinet has approved the purchase of 4 Gripen fighter jets, as part of its overall military modernization plan. Several days ago, the Royal Thai Air Force used these Swedish-made fighter jets in a deadly border conflict with neighboring Cambodia. Air Force spokesperson Prapas Songkhamdee stated that the Cabinet has approved the purchase of Gripen E/F fighter jets worth 19.5 billion baht from Saab company. In June of this year, the Thai Air Force announced plans to purchase a total of 12 of these fighter jets over a period of 10 years. Thai Air Force Commander Chaiyapruk Didanaku is scheduled to sign the procurement agreement with Saab company on August 25th. The Gripen fighter jets will replace the aging fleet of American-made F-16s in the Thai Air Force. During the five-day conflict, the Thai Air Force also used F-16s to strike Cambodian military facilities, resulting in over 40 deaths and displacing hundreds of thousands of civilians on both sides of the border. Subsequently, the two countries reached a ceasefire agreement under U.S. mediation, and this week senior security officials are holding talks to discuss further measures to de-escalate tensions.
