On August 4th local time, the Attorney General of New Jersey, Matthew Platkin, announced that the state had reached an environmental settlement agreement with three American chemical companies, Chemours, DuPont, and Corteva. These three companies agreed to pay $875 million to New Jersey to settle claims related to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) pollution. The agreement also requires the three companies to fund the cleanup of four contaminated factory sites and establish a $1.2 billion remediation fund and a $475 million reserve fund to guard against future bankruptcies or defaults.
