Beirut port explosion fifth anniversary, Lebanese President reiterates "finding out the truth"
On August 4th, local time, on the fifth anniversary of the massive explosion in the port of Beirut, Lebanon, President Aoun once again promised to seek justice and emphasized that accountability remains a top priority for the nation. On that day, Aoun stated that Lebanon is determined to "uncover the whole truth, regardless of the obstacles faced or the level of individuals involved in the case." On August 4, 2020, a massive explosion occurred in the port of Beirut due to the ignition of approximately 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrate, resulting in the deaths of over 200 people, injuries to more than 6,500 people, and severe damage to large parts of the city. According to Lebanese media reports, there has been no significant progress in the investigation of the explosion, with the investigation repeatedly facing political interference and delays lasting for several years.
