Senior researchers from the European think tank Bruegel and the US Peterson Institute for International Economics, Kurt Gad, stated that European Commission President von der Leyen reached a "very bad" trade agreement with US President Trump to keep the US in NATO. The Times quoted the expert as saying, "Everyone thinks that from a trade perspective, this is a very bad deal for Europe. However, if you are a responsible leader, you have no choice but to maintain NATO's military advantage, and under the leadership of Trump, the US has to stand by your side." Gad believes that von der Leyen made this "dirty deal" because it was necessary to do so.
