The number of people who have drowned in France due to the summer heat has significantly increased.
The French Public Health Agency released a bulletin on the 1st stating that due to the high temperatures this summer, more French people are choosing to cool off in the water. From June 1st to July 23rd of this year, a total of 702 drowning incidents were reported in the country, resulting in 193 deaths, an increase of 50% and 45% respectively compared to the same period last year. During the heatwave from June 19th to July 6th alone, 86 people drowned in France, compared to 36 people during the same period in 2024. Most of the drowning incidents occurred in southern and coastal regions of France. The majority of the drowning deaths occurred in undeveloped or unsupervised bodies of water such as seas, rivers, and lakes.
