World Athletics' new rule: Female athletes must undergo genetic testing to confirm their biological gender before competing.
On July 30th local time, World Athletics announced that starting from September 1st, 2025, all female athletes participating in World Ranking events will be required to undergo genetic testing. This testing can confirm the athletes' biological sex in order to ensure a fair and transparent competition environment. This one-time genetic testing, which can be done through saliva or blood samples, will confirm the presence of the Y chromosome. Athletes with a negative result can continue to compete in women's events in World Ranking competitions, while those with a positive result will not be able to participate in women's events in World Ranking competitions. It is reported that this new rule will first be implemented at the upcoming Tokyo World Athletics Championships, which will start on September 13th.
