The Health and Family Planning Commission responds whether to increase subsidies for families.
At a press conference on the introduction of childcare subsidies and fertility support measures by the State Council Information Office, a reporter asked: How does China evaluate the government's efforts to increase the birth rate? If necessary, is it possible to increase subsidies and other assistance to families in the future? Wang Haidong, director of the Population and Family Planning Department of the National Health Commission, replied that population is a slow-changing variable affected by many factors. The effectiveness of fertility support policies, including childcare subsidies, needs to be observed for a long time and continuously tracked and comprehensively evaluated during the implementation process. International experience shows that fertility support requires a multi-dimensional policy approach to form a systematic support system. Going forward, the National Health Commission will work with relevant departments to further deepen research on major population development issues, improve the population monitoring system, strengthen the evaluation of policy effectiveness, and also enhance policy reserves to continuously improve the fertility support policy system and promote high-quality population development.
